camille’s story
I came to ceramics unexpectedly.
For over ten years, I’ve worked as a registered nurse (and still do!). For most of my life, I was firmly “the science kid”- drawn to biology and chemistry, more comfortable in a lab than a studio, and never someone who considered themselves particularly artistic. Creativity, in the traditional sense, didn’t feel like my space.
That changed six years ago when I first started working with clay.
What began as simple curiosity quickly turned into something much deeper. There was an immediate, almost surprising sense of connection- a quiet focus and mindfulness that I hadn’t experienced before. Working with clay became a way to slow down, manage my anxiety and be present, and to create with both intention and intuition.
During the pandemic, whilst working on the Covid Wards, that connection only deepened. In a time that felt uncertain and overwhelming, ceramics became a steady, grounding practice- something I could return to each day.
Over the past six years, that personal practice has grown into something much larger.
What started as a small, Etsy-style venture has evolved alongside my skills and techniques into a full creative business. Today, I work from my own studio, where I not only create but also share this practice with others- running classes, hosting workshops, and participating in design markets.
The studio is rarely quiet. My two dogs, Norman and Maisie, are usually close by- often curled up under the warmth of the kiln or asleep at my feet - steady companions through long making days. And my pottery husband, always a good sport, has fully embraced his role as the unofficial (and unpaid) studio intern.
At the heart of it all is the same feeling that drew me in from the beginning: the simple, powerful act of making something by hand.
